Ireland : economy and migrations

Introduction :

I’m going to talk about the link between migrations and the economy in Ireland. This subjectet falls into the notion Spaces and exchanges because it shows the movement of people through migration. Moreover , it shows that they can leave and go back to their country. I’m going to answer the following question : « To what extent were migrations in Ireland betwenn 1950’s and 2010 influenced by the economic situation ? ». First of all, I will analyze the situation in the 1950’s. Secondly, I will concentrate on the period of the Celtic Tiger. Finally, I will deal with the end of the Celtic Tiger.

I’m going to start my first part.

Firts Part :

The 1950’s was a period of economic crisis in Ireland. Durind this period many Irish migrated toward Great Britain. Indeed, we studied a extract from an history essay wich entitled Britain’s Irish Workers in wich we learn that Ireland was in a catastrophic economic situation. So, Irish had to leave their country to emigrate toward England to find a job, to flee from poverty and mostly to have a better life

I finished my first part so I will start the second

Second Part :

After a long period of economic crisis , Ireland learnt an economic boom between 1998 and 2008 wich is called the Celtic Tiger. During this period, many Irish or descendant of Irish’s migrants go back to Ireland thanks to the economic situation . Indeed, we can see that in the article from the New York Times wich entitled Coming Back Home. This article shows that during the Celtic Tiger Dublin became an atractive city with a young population. The article explain that at this period people had enough money and a job. They were happy while before the Celtic Tiger young Irish wanted to leave Ireland to go to the USA to have a better life. Moreover, the Celtic Tiger allowed Irelandto become more open-minded because before the economic boom the Irish population was only white and catholic. Whereas during the Celtic Tiger the population becale multicultural. We can see this in the extract from an essay wich entitled Ireland goes Global written by Kevin Sullivan. This document describes that thanks to immigration during Celtic Tiger , Ireland become multicultural with unhabitants wich have differents origins. On other hand, the city coulded not develop as fast as the arrival of migrants and so there are not enough structures such as schools or apartments or hospitals.

I will start my last part.

Third Part :

Each economic boom has an end and it was the case of the Celtic Tiger. Indeed, in 2008 because of the global economy crisis, Ireland returned in an economic crisis. We can see this in a bar chart represents the evolution of unemployment between 1990 and 2010. It shows from 4% in 2006 to 13% in 2010. This rise of unemployment caused a new period of emigration. We can find this problem in the poster wich entitled Save me of the emigration. This poster can represent emigration because we can see a man with his suitcase about to leave Ireland. Indeed, this poster is rather an asking for help to stay in his country.
