one of his most famous paintings is "american gothic", painted in 1930.

On October 29, 1929, Black Tuesday hit Wall Street as investors traded some 16 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange in a single day. Billions of dollars were lost, wiping out thousands of investors. In the aftermath of Black Tuesday, America and the rest of the industrialized world spiraled downward into the Great Depression (1929-39), the deepest and longest-lasting economic downturn in the history of the Western industrialized world up to that time.

I can see two characters who are in front of there farm which is typically american with there gothic windows which was the inspiration of Grant wood.

  1. Where does the scene of this painting take place?  Is it Outdoor or indoor? In which country? Be specific.

The scene takes place outdoors in Iowa which is a state in the Midwest of the United States where Grant Wood lived when he was a child.

  1. Who are the characters? How old do you think they are? What’s their job? Describe their attitude,  facial expressions and clothes. What are they doing?

The photo represents a middle-aged couple, usually interpreted as a farmer with his wife or daughter, standing in front of their house, a wooden farmhouse built in the architectural style of the 1890s, known as the Carpenter Gothic. However, little background is visible, because the characters are so close to the viewer. Wood based the farm on Dibble House, a building he saw in the small town of Edon in Iowan, and used his sister Nan and his dentist Dr. Byron McKeeby as models for the couple, dressing them with traditional clothes and by painting them with rather neutral faces with on one side his sister who looks at the horizon and his dentist on the other who looks at us in some way.

  1. When does the scene take place?

The scene takes place in the morning or the middle of the day when the farmers are working because it is not really hot at these times because it is less difficult to do certain activities of the farmers outside

  1. What is the atmosphere of the painting and how do you feel when you look at that painting?
