She has to speak English in her work

She has to give guided tours in English for tourists (Japanese Russian and chines)

Collect as much information as she can

Then she put it all into the right order (eliminate what is not important)

If it is the first time, she practices her speech with her friends

If she is using new words, she tries to find out how to pronounce them (she can ask help from teachers coming from England)

Advices for someone who is giving his first presentation in English:

Prepare his presaentation (make a series of notes but do not right down everything)

The English used must be simple and clear and notes should be conciced

Remember that not everybody in the group is a native speaker of english

Unless they are professionnals, don’t use too much specific vocabulary

Learn the key words and structures

Explain the three situations in which Hélène needs to speak English:

The first situation is outside of July and August, she has to give guided tour in English to different nationalities (like Japanes, Chinese or Russian) because those languages are not proposed in guided tour

2- How does Hélène prepare her presentations:

  • If she knows the site:

If Hélène knows the site, she does not have to make research but she tries to find out information about the group she will guide to adapt and personalise her presentation. The presentation also deepends of the group. For example, a presentation with a group of students in architecture won’t be the same as a presentation with a group of school students

  • If she is not familiar with the site:

If she is not familiar with the monument she has to present, she prepares her presentation in many ways as she would have done in French. She has to collect as much information as she can about the site.

She then sorts the information she got and put it into the right order and eliminate what is not important.

She prepares a series of notes.

  • When she presents somewhere for the first time in English:

She does  the same preparation que lorquuelle is familiar with the site and she practices her presentation with her friends

  • If she needs to use new technical words, she tries to find out how to pronounce them and sometimes asks for help from teachers from England.

3- . What advice would Hélène give to anyone who has to make their first presentation in English?

Prepare the presentation by searching for information, righting down some concise notes with key expressions and information you want to give to the group. Do not right the whole presentation down.

Use a simple and clear English, do not use too much technical vocabulary. Some people in the group are not native English speakers.
