II/ A complex relationship.

I/ After World War II , the British Empire had many colonies. Queen E2 began to reign when her father died while she was traveling in Kenya.

She then decided to do everything possible to facilitate the transition of decolonized countries, because it was very complicated to go from a country under domination to political freedom.

The Queen wants, during her 1953 Christmas speech, to convey the idea that her image of the Commonwealth (Union of several States which unite while retaining their sovereignty) is totally different from the organizations of the former colonies. "no resemblance to empires of the past".

II/ The queen then toured countries gaining independence such as India and Pakistan in 1947. And the most recent country to cut ties with the crown was Barbados last year. Most colonies saw the queen as the symbol of august values. But the older the queen became, the less she could take care of it and the more the countries re-emerged the assimilations of the monarchy to racism. Countries began to want compensation for the pain inflicted on the country by colonization. Countries said that this colonization had retarded their economic, cultural and psychological development. In March, Prince William and his wife Kate were welcomed to Jamaica by protesters seeking compensation and apologies for their years of suffering.

But decolonization is a complicated process, moreover in certain countries of the Commonwealth, institutions like the Scouts continue to teach the British colonial model and are inspired by the British educational system.
