JOURNALIST. Hello Penny, how is it going at Vimy Ridge ?

PENNY. Everything is ok, the sun is shining. People from all walks of life come by the thousands, to say thank you and to remember. They gather under the soaring pillars of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial to mark the 100th anniversary of that fateful battle as you can see here.

PENNY. Hello you, can you introduce yourself ?

TANISHA. Good morning, I am Tanisha Tiaret, and I am teaching history. PENNY. So you must know exactly what did happen here 100 years earlier ?

TANISHA. Yes of course, I do, and the scene here had been quite different. Indeed, during the four-day battle, Canadians suffered horrible casualties with 3,598 dead and more than 7,000 wounded.

PENNY. Nowadays, the sun shines down on the masses forcing many to hide behind umbrellas.

TANISHA. The sun had been non-existent in 1917. It was very difficult for these men, who gave their lives to protect justice and freedom, but thanks to them, Canada succeed where the British and French had failed by capturing the ridge.

PENNY. Is she your daughter ?

TANISHA. Yes she is, I strongly believe that it is important for children to attend this sort of commemoration to keep in mind what happened in past. History reminds us how everything can start again and how it is easy to loose our freedom. Being here today state loud and clear that we struggle against evil forces that try to divide us.

What is paradoxical is the situation of the Canada one hundred years later, they fought for great Britain, won this for them and leaved stronger and more united as an independent country committed to peace. Despite fighting for Great Britain, it was the occasion for Canada to affirme its own leadership by winning where the British lost. Consequently, the commemoration takes a different spirit for the Canadians because they become united from now on
