  1. To illustrate this situation, I will first dwell on Lilia's situation at home. Then, in a second step, I will talk about his situation at school.

To begin with, we can observe that Lilia has an interest in the similarity of her culture with a man named Monsieur Pirzada, whom we assume to be her teacher. Indeed, the latter pays particular attention to the common points of her teacher with her family, for example what they eat or the jokes they make.

This is why, later in the text, her father insists on explaining to her that she must not confuse Monsieur Pirzada 's culture with his country of origin. Indeed, he specifies to his daughter that he is a Bengali, of course, but also a Muslim.

He therefore evokes the current situation in eastern Pakistan.

Lilia doesn't seem to know about it and therefore doesn't ask her father for more information.

However, this disturbs her a lot, and she asks herself a lot of questions, especially at school.

She therefore tries to find out during a project at the library with one of these teachers to take a book on Asia. However, we notice that Madame Kenyon does not agree with Lili's interest in this book and quickly puts it away. We can therefore conclude that there is a real difference between Lilia's situation at school where her father keeps her informed of the world around her and at school where her teacher prevents her from getting information by her own.

Indeed, this means that Americans have so many different cultures that they don't even know what culture they have in common. This is why we speak of a fractured community and this is why it is much criticized by American people.

  1. We have noticed in text B that even if several people share the same habits, the same culture and the same way of life, this does not necessarily mean that they have the same origins and are part of the same community.

We note in the text A that Lilia, who comes from Asia and notices that her professor shares the same lifestyle as her family but finally realizes that she is not part of the same community at all.

We can therefore conclude that the example of Lilia with her teacher is the perfect illustration of what is called the fractured community.
