Hubert de Givenchy was born to a prestigious family. Though he thought of studying law, he became a fashion designer instead. He is now known for clothing of superb cut and workmanship made up in beautiful fabrics. His clothes were pure, classical, and sometimes severe in their simplicity of design

Givenchy is a French brand of clothing, accessories, perfumes and cosmetics with Parfums Givenchy.

The house of Givenchy was founded in 1952 by designer Hubert de Givenchy and is a member of Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture et du Pret-a-Porter. It is owned by luxury goods behemoth LVMH and in 1993 achieved a total sales worth of $176 million, making it the second largest apparel division of LVMH after Dior.

History

During Hubert de Givenchy’s managing of the label, he became famous for his modern, ladylike styles. ome of the considered best dressed women in the world have been Givenchy’s wearers – Audrey Hepburn, Lauren Bacall, Babe Paley, Greta Garbo, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlène Dietrich, Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis, Princess Grace of Monaco and Wallis Simpson. Audrey Hepburn was probably his best ambassador . She wore his dresses out and on screen in films such as Sabrina, How to Steal a Million and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In 1952, Hubert de Givenchy founded his own label. In 1953, he met Audrey Hepburn his muse and ambassador and Cristobal Balenciaga whom he always considered his master and influence. This influence is evident in the designer’s taste for structured minimalist clothing. In 1954, Givenchy was the first designer to present a luxury collection of women’s pret-a-porter. In 1973, Givenchy started his own line of menswear “Gentleman Givenchy”.

Retirement

Hubert de Givenchy retired in 1995. John Galliano was Givenchy’s successor at the head of the house. Galliano was moved on to Christian Dior and Alexander McQueen took his place at Givenchy. In 2001, Julien Macdonald was appointed Artistic Director for women’s haute couture and pret-a-porter. Finally, in 2005, Riccardo Tisci became in charge of both collections. Tisci is known for his like of gothic touches and space-age minimalism. Givenchy’s menswear line was relaunchedin Spring 2005 under fahsion designer Ozwald Boateng. Boateng introduced a definitive silhouette and style for the brand.

Trademark Creations

Some of Givenchy’s trademark items are the Bettina blouse, made of masculine shirt fabric, with an open collar and sleeves decorated with English embroidery which was copied all around the world. This blouse was followed by a revolutionary gown with loose body. He also achieved the exaggeration of the bag dress creating the balloon line and the trapeze line. Alog the funneled collar coat (1958), the enveloped dresses (1966) and the textiles inspired by Miró, Matisse or Christian Bérard are among his trademark designs.

In 1952, Hubert de Givenchy opened his couture Maison after working as a stylist with the greatest couturiers of his time, from Jacques Fath to Elsa Schiaparelli.
