Prince AlbertThe Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations in 1851 was the first of the World exposition. It took place from May 1 to October 15, 1851 in London. It marked the height of British power in the Victorian era.The event was organised by  , husband of Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom. Prince Albert was an enthusiastic promoter of the self-financing exhibition.The Exhibition served primarily as a means of educating the British peopleIt also aimed to develop the taste of the middle classes as well as to raise the working class. But unfortunately this second objective was not completely fulfilled given the price of the entrance tickets.The official opening of the Exhibition took place in Hyde Park, within the Crystal Palace. The crystal palace is so named because the building is made of glass. It symbolizes the industrial superiority of the United Kingdom. The crystal palace was built by Joseph Paxton (1803-1865), a British architect and gardener. This exposition was a museum, it brings together artisanal and industrial productions from all over the world.The success of the event was undeniable, with more than six million entries, equivalent to more than a quarter of the population of the United Kingdom at the time. Visitors came from all over the world.The net profit amounted to 195,000 pounds. Prince Albert proposed to use all this money to create an educational center that would bring together educational institutions, science and the arts. What he did in South kensington.
