Activity 1 : Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer. Presentation of the book by the author. Work on your own.

  1.  Who is Jonathan Safran Foer ? Where does he live ? Give the name of one of the novels he wrote before. Why did he make the decision to write his book Eating animals?

Jonathan Safran Foer is a writer. He considers himself as a novelist. He lives in Brooklyn, near the Park Slope. He wrote Extremely Loud. He makes the decision to write this book because during his childhood, he used to spend some weekend with his grandmother. And he realized that his grandmother was weighing him.

  1. Identify the other characters who are also present in the clip. List and characterize them.

There are also George, his female dog. Jonathan Safran Foer practice the French kiss with his dog.

His grandmother. She always wants to give to him something to eat. The author went to her house when he was younger.

Sasha, his four-year-old son.

  1. What is the book about? Justify by quoting

The book is about family: “Eating animals is ostensibly a book about meat but that is not really how I think about it. I think of it as a book about family”

  1. “We believe in her cooking more fervently than we believe in God.” “Every meal comes with lessons.” What’s the meaning of the hug story, according to you ?

The hug story has a meaning of a new meeting with his grandmother. He likes when she takes care of him. Jonathan Safran Foer learnt a lot with the meals of his grandmother because his grandmother gives a important place to the food and to the health.

  1. “At the end of the day, it’s a family story.” Explain. Can you guess what is Grandma’s story ?

The author says that because he has a strong bond with his grandmother. He explains that he understood that animals are almost like humans. It is a reason why he practices the French kiss with his dog. The Grandma’s story is what make him thinking about our way to eat and the way in what he decides to live.
