Jean Michel Basquiat

aka S.A.M.O

Jean michel Basquiat was a graffiti painter. Born in Brooklyn in a family of mixed origins (Puerto Rican by his mother and Haitian by his father), Jean-Michel Basquiat is a very early child in the field of languages and drawing. After his parents separated and moved, he returned to New York at the age of 16. He discovered the underground world, became involved with graffiti artists and abandoned his studies. He then takes the pseudonym of SAMO (for “Same Old Shit”) to tag the streets of Manhattan. To make up for the absence of black artist in amarican , Basquiat’s ambition quickly doubled from a quest for identity placed under the sign of denial. His taste for cultural mixing and his hatred of racism nourish a neo-expressionist work that is sometimes dark and anguished. Jean-Michel Basquiat has produced thousands of works on paper, often complex. Drawing is an experimental practice: superpositions of words, sketches that evoke graffiti connected to each other by an enigmatic thread. Among other things, there are often skeletal and frightening forms. So many subjects that refer to the theme of death, a real obsession of the artist.
