Idea of progress

I'm going to introduce you to the notion of the idea of progress. First, I believe that progress is an advance or an improvement in different sectors such as medicine, technology or science, but also in the socio-cultural environment. Progress allows the evolution of society. The surveillance society implies a technological progress. My issue is “ Surveillance devices : threat or progress?” . First I will show how our society can benefit from the new surveillance devices. Then I will broach the negative aspects of the surveillance society and finally, I will talk about the possible solutions to protect our privacy.

 Today, surveillance is everywhere, surveillance cameras are present in the streets, public transport. we saw in class, the importance of surveillance cameras in the city of Oxford. Surveillance cameras in taxis that recorded traveler’s  conversations.

The impact of the surveillance society

Positive effect

Technological

Using surveillance cameras in public places is very important, the cameras are capable to snap picture form far away, and it will help to investigate unlawful activity such as robbery, kidnapping, car accident, murder and drug dealing.

Morality

The poster shows a nightmarish vision of the surveillance society. The scene takes place in London because there is the underground logo. We can see big eyes which are hovering over the city. The poster is evocative of the 1984 novel written by GOERGE Orwell in 1949. In this dystopian novel, Orwell describes a dark future in a dictature where everybody is observed.

Negative effects

loss of freedom, it is immoral to monitor a person by trying to know or see what the person is doing, what they know, reads or thinks . an excessive form of control, can have negative impacts on social life, image rights against video recording. cameras are expensive, security has a high price  

The solutions to protect our privacy

be aware of hazards, be vigilant with technologies. know how to use new technologies

To conclude

I think the progress have really help people by improving their life; for example medecine progress or technological progress. It's difficult to imagine our life today without computer sciences. Man is aware of this technology, he must protect himself from dangers and be vigilant
