Idea of progress

The notion I am going to talk about is idea of progress. The last two centuries have seen societies progress in many field : industrial, scientific and technological ... As a matter of fact the technological progress our society undergoing, is invading our everyday life in order to make it easier but when too much technology rules the world it can be dangerous

because technology cannot be completely relied on.

We saw the theme Idea of progress through different documents. We have analysed documents about robots, with an extract from the BBC where the famous scientist Stephen Hawking says A.I. could destroy us, a document from the english news where Ray Kurzweil says that robots will be smarter than humans by 2029, a documents about NAO who says that robots are coming, an extract of the movie Her ny Spike Jonze which is dealing with A.I. and humans and an extract from I, Daniel Blake, by Ken Loach, at the job centre.

The aspects of the notion I chose to develop is if we should fear technology ? Is technology harmful ? Does it make people more lonely ?

The robots are coming. This is the title of the document about NAO robots. As we said, we have seen societies progress in many field. Scientits and ingineer are today able ton create robots which can speak 19 langages, help you in many field, read, assess emotions by analysing people's facial features and tones of voice. In my opinion, robots are going to change our lives as the cars changed our lives a few years ago. Soon, robots will be used in an amazing ammount of field.  Ray Kurzweil belives that computers will be able to learn from experiences, just like humans. They well be able to tell jokes, stories and even flirt. He thinks that it would not be long before computer intelligence is one billion times more powerful than the hulan brain.

Progress is essential to evolve. History is made of progress and evolution that have allowed the world to be what it's today. For exemple, today, medicine has become much more efficient and accessible. Robotics, science, technology and biology allow progress.

But can we say that progress is dangerous ? Where are the limits of progress ?

Stephen Hawking is one of the world's most renowned scientists. For him, progress can becomes really dangerous, especially with robots and A.I.. He thinks that if we create sophisticated A.I., it could be dangerous. It would take off on its own and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate. Human are limited by slow biological evolution and couldn't compete, and would be superseded. This disastrous scenario might look crazy, but Stephen Hawking knows what he is talking about, and I think we need to use caution.

Another problem with progress is that it can make people more lonely. Her is a movie which is dealing with this subject. The story takes place in a near future. Theodore,  a  single man, has a relationship with Samantha, a synthetic voice from a well-developed program. Even if, as we said, robots will be like humans, they will never be humans. In this movie, Theodore is lonely, as a lot of person in the same position. We can also talk about the movie I, Daniel Blake with the extract "At the job centre" ...................
