English essay- Zélie Neuburger, 2nd 2

 Some people believe that recycling is a waste of time. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this question?

Sorry if it’s not completely done, I had a class at 11h20.

Over the years, humans have destroyed Earth, by exploiting almost all of its resources. Today, our planet is endangered because of us, and we must find a way to preserve it. Is recycling a good option to preserve the Earth? For some people, it’s the right thing to do, but for others, it’s useless and a waste of time. In the first place, I’m going to introduce you to the benefits of recycling, then I will show you why for some people, it’s not useful and not important for our planet.

Earth is our planet, we, humans, have the chance to live and grow on it, but since the industrialization, all we do is destroy it. We pollute its natural resources, ruin the ecosystems, kill the flora and the fauna. Those days, we can’t just discuss about ecology, we all must live in an ecologically friendly way. Recycling is a very good option to preserve life on Earth. The definition is simple: recycling is the action of converting waste into reusable materials. Therefore, it’s a perfect solution. Firstly, all of us can be part of the recycling process, just by sorting our waste. It’s easy, it doesn’t take lots of time and it makes a big difference. Second of all, if overproduction is an issue, recycling can partly fix it because when you make things out of waste, you are reusing materials. Next, you may ask where all the waste goes, and I can tell it doesn’t just disappear. In Europe, most of the countries send their waste away, all over the globe. For instance, Belgium is the fifth country in the world that export the most waste. It is not acceptable to treat other countries like garbage.

Recycling might be good in some ways for Earth, but there are lots of disadvantages such as the fact that recycling sites are usually unhygienic and unsafe. The waste in theses locals are piled in unsanitary conditions and some of the chemical products can be dangerous, and a thread to the workers health. On top, recycling causes massive pollution. You might think that sorting your waste at home will make a difference, but it isn’t even comparable to the massive pollution at the industrial level. As long as the industrial production system doesn’t change its ways to product, recycling isn’t very helpful, even though it looks like it is. In addition, all the effort the populations have made didn’t really make a positive difference. In fact, recycling results in more pollution and higher energy consumption, thus it becomes less effective. Finally, the products made from recycled materials are less durable, for this reason that they are made of trash, consequently the quality isn’t as good as it will be. If the product was “new”.

To conclude, recycling is a solution to protect our planet, but it will only be very effective at a bigger scale, because right now, it’s more polluting than preserving the Earth. In my opinion we should continue and try harder to save our planet, and recycling is one of the good ways. If we all make an effort, I’m sure we will make a safe place to live for the next generations from the endangered
