Today we are going to introduce you to Bollywood, which is the musical film industry, located in Mumbai.  With more than 3,000(thre thousand)  films and almost 2 billion euros in revenue per year, Bollywood produces even more moovies than Hollywood.

The History Of Bollywood

It is in Calcutta, in 1907 (one thousand nine hundred and seven) that (Jamshedji Framji Madan) started to build a real chain of cinemas.

 In 1913 (one thousand nine hundred and thirteen) the first Indian fiction film was made. ( Raja Harishchandra).

The subject of the films is mythology or religion, it is from 1920 (one thousand nine hundred and twenty) that the themes diversify.

In 1931 (one thousand nine hundred and thirty-one) the first Indian speaking film was released: (Alam Ara). This film was a huge success at that time.

In 1931 (nineteen hundred and thirty-one), the speaking films are mostly in Hindi, but other Indian languages are more and more present in the following years.

 In 1937(one thousand nine hundred and thirty-seven), the first Bollywood colour film was released: (Kisan Kanya).

Between 1940 (1940) and 1960 (1960) is the golden age of Bollywood cinema, mythical films are released such as (Pyaasa), (Kaagaz ke pool), the production of films in Hindi is concentrated in Bombay.

In 1946 (one thousand nine hundred and forty-six), the film (Neecha Nagar) won price at the Cannes Film Festival!  

 It is from the 1960s (nineteen-sixties) that dramas give way to romance and action films in Bollywood.

 From 1980 (one thousand nine hundred and eighty) there was a decline in the quality of scriptwriting.

In the 1990s (nineteen-ninety), romantic and family comedies regained the upper hand and introduced a new generation of actors.

Finally, the 2000s(two thousand) correspond to the westernization and globalization of Bollywood film production; regaining the aura of its golden age!

What the films look like :

They last from 3(three) to 4(four) hours on average.

They are real musicals, the singing and dancing occupies a large part of the film.

In Bollywood productions, drama rubs shoulders with musicals, adventure films, detective films and even the wonderful without ever claiming to be realistic.

And the Hindu tradition is often present.

Sexual intercourse is never shown and very rarely kisses.

For the Indians, cinema is a means of escape from reality, and allows them to free themselves from their difficult daily lives. This is why Indian cinema must be everything at once to offer them even more entertainment and dreaming.
