  • Hello Miss I'm a nurse student in my second year and my name is. I'm going to check your blood pressure. What's your name?
  • My name is.
  • How are you feeling?
  • I'm fine
  • Can I take your blood pressure? Are you fine with it?
  • It's okay, you can do it.
  • Okay, I going to take your heart rate first. I will need to put my finger around your wrist in order to do it. Then I will wrap the blood pressure cuff around your arm. Then I will squeeze the inflation pump, there will be air in the cuff. It's going to be a little bit tight around your upper arm.
  • Okay.
  • I put stethoscope under the arm cuff, then I will need the listen to the “thumb” through my stethoscope in order to measure your blood pressure. In order to do that, I need to be in a quiet environment.
  • I understand. Why do you need to listen to the “thumb”
  • I will need to listen to the first thumb. It is the systolic pressure, when the heart has contracted, and it's the highest pressure. Then I will search for the last thumb, it is the diastolic pressure, that's when the heart is relaxed and is refilled with blood
  • Ah okay...
  • Do you prefer one arm in particular?
  • I prefer my left arm, if it's possible
  • Okay, I understand. I need to ensure that the cuff size is appropriate. I will need you to put your arm on the table, and relax it as much as possible.  Then I will proceed.
  • Okay, then I will keep quiet.
  • Your heart rate is 60 beats per minutes and your systolic pressure is 120 milimeter mercury and the diastolic pressure is 70 milimeter mercury . It's normal.
  • It's reassuring.
  • Then see you later.
  • Yes see you later.
