Introduction

Teachers play a huge role in the society. They model and prepare young people and students for the job market. Their attitude, their motivation, their satisfaction and commitment affect the quality of education students receive. When they moonlight, this affect the quality of the service they are giving in university. It is important to know what motivate them to moonlight, what are the aspects affected by moonlighting, etc. in order to improve the quality of the service they offer.  

Purpose of the study

The purpose of this study is to shed light on the reasons why some teachers in  universities looks for a second job. It aims to contribute to the understanding of moonlighting behavior in Christian university by focusing on the motives behind the phenomenon and the perceived consequences it brings.

Questions of research

  1. What is the gender and highest degree of the respondents?
  2. What is the average age of the respondents?
  3. What is the average number of years worked in the church?
  4. What is the percentage of moonlighter in the sample?
  5. What are the reasons that push people to look for a second job?
  6. What are the consequences of moonlighting?
  7. How many respondents think that moonlighting had consequences
  8. Is there a difference between the age and the number of years worked in the church for moonlighters and non-moonlighters?
  9. What is the relationship between the age of the respondents and the number of years worked in the church

Objectives

  1. To find the demographic variables of the respondents
  2. To find out the number of people in the sample with a second job
  3. To find out the reasons why teachers look for a second-job (moonlight)
  4. To find out the perceived consequences of moonlighting.
  5. To find out if the age and number of years worked in the church is different for those with a second job and those without a second job.
  6. To find out if there is link between the age of the respondents and the number of years worked in the church

Population and sample

 The population of this study is constituted by graduate students coming from seven differents universities in Africa. The sample size was 17 students.

Due to time constraint, we used a purpose sample of five students among the 18 students. The selection was done in such a way that each university was represented. So, the results and findings in this paper are based on the five respondents.

Presentation of results and findings

In this section we present our results and findings. We start by describing the sample and then move to difference questions. At the end we will look at the relationship between two variables using the Pearson correlation coefficient.

Table 1 indicates that 60% of respondents are females while 40% are males.

The number of years worked in the church in the sample varies from four years to twenty years.  There is one person who worked for 10 years, another for 16 years and another for 19 years.  The average of years worked in the church is 13.8 years.

The age of respondents varies from 34 years old to 43 years old on their last birthday. Two respondents were 38 years old on their last birthday.  The average age is 38 years old.
