Nowadays, English has became a global language. It has been converted in a lingua franca. This means that it has been adopted as the language of common understanding among people who do not have the same native language. Why people accept English as their global language? Among 19th and 20th centuries, due to imperialism and the rise in industry and commerce, the British Empire became a global potential. This is one of the reason why the English was expanded all over the world. Currently, the United States influence has increased the situation of this language, taking it to the top. The domain of the media is the most important fact for his succeed.

Nevertheless, is not necessary seek a recently explanation. Actually, one of the leading popularizers was from the end of the 16th century. He spread his English writing worldwide. In particular, he expanded the dramatic potential of characterisation, plot, language and genre. He is the well-known writer, William Shakespeare.

Shakespeare, an English poet and playwright, is considered the greatest writer in English language and one of the most distinguished in world literature. His plays have been translated in most global languages and performed all over the world. He born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon from a notorious family. At the age of eighteen years old, he married Anne Hathaway. Years later, William decided to move to London to starting his theatrical career. While he lived in London, he wrote around two plays per years. He never published his literary works but they were represented in The Globe and other London theatres. Later, he retired to Stratford where he died in 1616, as the Spanish writer Cervantes. Most of his works were posthumously printed by two actors, John Heminges and Henry Condell. His plays are popular known today and are essential in English studies. Also, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.

Now the question many people are asking is, why is it necessary to study William Shakespeare nowadays? Ben Jonson, in First Folio acclaimed Shakespeare as “not of an age, but for all time”. Not only his fluid writing, also his complex characters and common situations, helped him to reach people minds and make them enjoy. On the other hand, Shakespeare expanded different genres as drama, with Romeo and Juliet, and soliloquies, which used to explore characters minds. Otherwise, he influenced novelists such as Thomas Hardy, William Faulkner, and Charles Dickens, Herman Melville, who owe much to Shakespeare in his soliloquies and his Captain Ahab in Moby-Dick is a classic tragic hero, inspired by King Lear. Shakespeare has also influenced musicians and painters over the years like Giuseppe Verdi. The psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud based on Shakespearean psychology for his theories of human nature, particularly Hamlet.

In Shakespeare's times, English grammar was not standardized such as now, and his use of the language helped to shape modern English. Samuel Johnson, who is the best English literary critic, appointed William often than other writers in his most famous book, A Dictionary of English Language. All over the years, Shakespeare was praised by notables artists and even important film productions made many movies based on his stories.
