I’m going to talk about the notion of myths and heroes. First of all, I would like to give a definition of myths and heroes. A myth can be defined as a popular belief or tradition embodying the ideals and institutions of a society and a hero can be defined as the main character in a literary or dramatic work, an event, period or movement.

Now we can ourselves, to what the extent the myth of the American dream has an impact on many immigrants? And why Nelson Mandela is considered as a hero?

To illustrate the notion, I have chosen two documents: a song and a movie.

For a long time, people have wanted to live in an open society where they would become wealthy. Today live in America is a dream. It’s the American dream which means that the American social, economic, and political system makes success possible for every individual. It’s a set of ideals.

The first document is a song entitled “American Land “which refers to the myth of the American dream with a very idealized vision. So, this song shows that the immigrants were attracted to America where there were jobs opportunities and a better life. In fact he describes America like a land of opportunity. That’s why many people poverty-stricken come into this country to climb the rungs overnight and to start from scratch. However, the American dream becomes a reality for a few of all immigrants. And if their dream was fulfilled, they had to accept low wages and tough jobs to stay in America. So, the USA has always been a country of immigration and considered as a promised land, it’s the myth of American dream.

Although many people don’t achieve their prospects, others shape the mentalities and they are heroic. We saw the hero Nelson Mandela through the movie “Invictus”.This movie shows how Mandela became the real champion. It took place in 1995 in South Africa during the election of Nelson Mandela which marks the end of the apartheid. But South Africa is still a divided country and there is a lot of inequality between white and black people. To unify the country Mandela bets on sport and supports the captain of the national rugby team in order to win the world cup even if it seems difficult. At the death of Nelson Mandela on December 2013, we have seen the entire world lost in fact he was the symbol of freedom peace and equality. In short, Nelson Mandela is considered as a hero and he is a role model.

Finally, I was really interested in the notion of myth and hero, because it changed our lives. Indeed, the myth or the heroes have an enormous capacity to change the mind of many people. So, the myth of American dream attracts a lot of destitute people who come to the USA in order to find success. And to my mind, the notion of myth is built by heroes.
