IMMIGRATION IN THE USA

« Our country is stronger when we harness the talents and ingenuity of striving, hopeful immigrants » Obama said in his State of the Union speech in 2013. As the son of a Kenyan immigrant, Barack Obama is the living proof of the virtues of immigration he extols in this sentence.

After all, had they had no immigrants, the USA would not even have existed. America’s very motto, “e pluribus unum” shows just how precious they are to this land of plenty, home to the American Dream. Actually, the USA has to trumpet immigration. It has to create role models like Indra Nooyi, who was bred in India and who is now the CEO of Pepsico (she was awarded “CEO of the year” in 2009). Besides, in US universities, 21% of the teachers are immigrants so it shows that the so-called Brain Drain is a real Brain Gain for the USA.

Yet immigration has raised criticism. And rather than fostering integration, it seems that the successive waves of immigrants to America have produced a multilayered nation where cultural groups live near each other rather than with each other. Some argue that immigration is undermining American culture – read WASP culture. True, being born overseas, they stand apart from the so-called WASP population. By way of example, the recent rise in the number of Hispanics has resulted in an often-racist backlash in many states.

To me, not only were such concerns preposterous but also at odds with the very idea upon which America was built: that of an open country in which hard work is the primary gauge of one’s merit.

To quote John Kennedy, “American society is a process, not a conclusion”.
