English: The history of Ireland

1171: The first English invasion: they massacred the peasant population. But the population resisted and a lot of rebellion began, with act of terrorism. The population: Catholics, different language like Gaelic + different culture like Irish

1171-1800: The English settle was in the north: The Irish had to stay in the barrow lands of the south. In 1649 Olivier GROMWELL bought a huge army and crushed the Irish

1801: Great Britain + Ireland became the United Kingdom

1804: The Great Famine (potatoes) because of the mildew. 1, 5 million of people died and many people emigrated to: USA; AUSTRALIA; ENGLAND (1 million)

Early 20th century: Home rules: was the big cry from the south and from the Catholics still in the north (The right to the self-government)

1916: In Dublin, It was a very significant year “the home rules” proclaimed a provisional Republic government  One of the bloodiest situation in the south (many riots) called “the Easter Rising”

1919: The IRA became a military force they countered the British Army and a Guerrilla war began

1921: partition of Ireland: 6 countries in the north. The south called “The Irish free state”or “EIRE”

1948: Republic were proclaimed

1968-1972: “The Troubles”in Ulster (protestant). The Catholics were discriminated against in terms of employment and housing. The British troupes were sent to Northern Ireland to keep order (1969)

1972: Bloody Sunday: During a Rally 13 Catholics were killed by the British soldiers in Londonderry (protestant) or Derry (Catholics)

1969-1975: The Irish took their Terrorist campaign into England (pubs, buses) the tower of London was an important target

-The Ulster loyalist: They killed IRA leaders and they had military wings = Sinn Fein (ourselves alone)

-The Maze Prison: IRA Leaders died in prison, they were hunger strikes

-Bobby SANDS: was a martyr, he was the first IRA to die in prison; he did a hunger strikes (1981)

As Gerry CONLON is mistakenly taken for a sniper by the RUC, people start a riot to cover him. Giuseppe prevents his son from being kneecapped by the IRA. Gerry meets his old schoolmate Paul HILL on the ferry to Britain. Gerry & Paul end up in a squat where one of their home friends, Paddy ARMSTRONG, lives. Gerry and Paul meet up with Charlie BURKE, a tramp, when spending the night in a park. Then they enter a prostitute’s flat and steal some money. Loaded with money, Gerry goes back to Belfast. Gerry and Paul, denounced by one of the squatters, are arrested. Giuseppe decides to go to his sister-in-law’s in London to find
