Subject: Kerala Sustainable Tour Package. Dear Paul,

I am writing to give you a quick account of my findings in Kerala to include in our Kerala Tour packages. Kerala is a narrow state between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, and it is really beautiful and successful in term of sustainability. It offers real hope for the future of responsible tourism.

The heritage is conserved, nature and wildlife are preserved, and local people are turning heritage homes into profitable hospitality.

The Backwaters top my list of places to explore. The state is blessed with an outstanding network of meandering canals, lakes and rivers which are the perfect place to enjoy nature.

A stay on a houseboat should definitely be included in the tour of Kerala we will offer...

The traditional houseboats, called Kettuvallams, are equipped with modern comforts and traditional style and are eco-friendly in nature. They are made of bamboo and are paddle-powered, although solar panels are encouraged too. The Backwaters are vulnerable land and houseboat operators must respect strict criteria so that they don't pollute the ecosystem.

I think visitors would enjoy the breathtaking, lush, palm-fringed waterways while relaxing on the deck of a houseboat.

We can choose between a day-trip or a cruise of several nights spent on the houseboat.

All comfort is provided and the staff is made of local people. The food served is traditional, prepared on board with local fresh produce.

It's like a home-stay holiday, and very educational on top of that since it increases tourists' eco-consciousness. I highly recommend we include a stay on a houseboat in our Kerala tour as it is consistent with forest conservation and community welfare.

I look forward to telling you more about the destination.

Best Regards,

Fiona

Part 2 You will write a short introduction for a brochure on Kerala promoting the importance of sustaining Kera-

la's intangible heritage.

• In your introduction you will present 3 examples of Kerala's intangible heritage.

• You will emphasize the importance of local community involvement.

• You will explain how both tourists and local people benefit from these cultural events.

Rich in tradition and heritage, the culture of Kerala has a charm of its own reflecting its vibrant traditions of festivals, cuisine, and holistic medicine.

Kerala's intangible heritage remains vivid thanks to local communities who promote their skills and know-how through local cultural events. They encourage tourists to sustain Kerala's culture by discovering and learning about how to heal the body and mind with Ayurvedic herbs, how to cook in the traditional way of Southern India, and how to wash elephants and ornate them for festival processions.

By sustaining Kerala's heritage, tourists minimise negative economic, environmental and social impacts. They generate greater economic benefits for local people and enhance the well-being of host communities. They contribute to improving working conditions. Local people can thus become
