Nowadays, a sustainable competitive advantage must be achieved by the company so as to maintain the leadership of its products among the others in the market, an advantage over competitors gained by offering consumers greater value, either by means of lower prices or by providing greater benefits and service that justifies higher prices. Can social media help achieve this goal ? Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Youtube ... Social media attract more and more people on the Internet. Global organisations and other Companies must learn to use it as to aim at new targets. This new channel of communication can enhance your company's presence on the Internet, increase your number of customers and recruit your future employees differently in order to gain competitive advantage... Social media are all the tools of Web that allow you to interact and share content with other users. Logically, virtual social networks, the most well known in the UK as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are a subset of this large set of tools that are social media. Outside of virtual social networks you will basically find all platforms that permit you to share content, indexing or comment: Youtube, Dailymotion... Social networks on the Internet are virtual clusters of individuals or legal persons (associations, enterprises, institutions) for their members to discuss and exchange information on dedicated sites. Everyone uses them for specific reasons not only individuals to share information, links, interests, and search for people, upload photos and videos but also professionals to generate business, promote their business, services, business intelligence to follow the trends, make recruitments. Experiencing social networks in recent years an exponential growth, Facebook, the most famous of them went in three years from 100 000 to 1 million registrations per day in the world! The strength of social networks is their immediacy and speed; the user finds a product, a service or a person and shares the information on real-time with all his "friends". The potential of social networks is huge for companies that want to expand their customer base, their reputation and sales. I will be discussing in this essay about How Social Media can be used by a global organisation to gain competitive advantage by giving references and examples over different companies.
