Zineb H. is a Moroccan business woman who decided to learn by herself. Like her, other people made the decision to become business people without studying entrepreneurial management at school; for example we can quote Charles Darwin with his evolution theory or Steve Jobs with his famous company: Apple. These people have succeeded apart from educational system and it can be a proof of self-taught effectiveness; but the choice to learn by oneself is most difficult to implement than learning by scholar system.

In this document we’ll study two learning methods, in a first time we’ll present the self-taught method and its particularities, then, in a second time, the scholar method and its controversies.

At first I’m going to give a definition of “self-taught”. So self-taught is a learning process where the main actor is completely free, and the process is entirely manage by him. He educate oneself without have any contact with scholar system. But to learn the best things he has to look for the best experts by fields. The main quality of people who practice self-taught is to be the only responsible of one’s training, even if they contact people to get advice. They have to choose the disciplines they want to learn, to look for information, to have a good time working and to confirm their qualifications. There are many things to do but sometimes when you want to learn specifics things it’s better to avoid educational system.

Indeed, educational system is always criticized; schools practice the same education for all people so it became too strict. Education has to allow for every student to choose different fields to become very specialized and acquire a good general knowledge.

In educational system if a student want to learn more about a subject he can’t, if he has difficulties to understand the course, the professor can’t spend a lot of time to explain him; teachers have programs and they can’t spend time about subjects outside the program. So it’s not a natural way to learn, students have to know some things that they don’t interested by their and they only want the diploma at the end.

When you study by your own way, generally you develop a real passion. In fact, you can learn when you want with your own hourly; generally you study a subject that you chose, so it’s motivating. To succeed with this type of training you have to be motivated and passionate. The determination is most important than for students who learn at school.

The self-thought method has more chance to succeed than educational system because people are completely wrapped up in their work; they work a lot because it’s more a passion than training, so the current life and the study life are similarly.

The self-thought is generally associated to the practice. With this type of training, we can study the theory part everywhere, so we can do the training where we can practice too. It’s an enormous advantage because we can make the comparison between theory and practice all the time. The relation with the reality gives a security to anticipate interpretation errors, we can identify essential things. Practice aspect is very important to be more efficient in theory aspect.

Most of people choose the scholar education, there is some advantages and some inconvenient. First, according the cone of learning, we can say that 10% of reading documents are in memory fifteen days later, 20% of hearing information. When students are more actives, they are more information in memory so they are in memory 70% of what they said fifteen days before. Now
