UNCLE SAM

Uncle Sam is a common national character of the american governement that, according the legend, came into use during the 1812 War and was supposedly a reference to Samuel Wilson.

The term Uncle Sam is derived (coined)from Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from Troy in New York, who supplied rations to soldiers.

The origin of the hypothese of Samuel Wilson is, when he brought meat, on the packs, there was the inscription U.S and the soldiers of the base, receiving marked boxes of meat "U.S", interpreted with funny these initials "Uncle Sam" in honor of there supplier Samuel Wilson.

In 1961, the Congress identified Samuel Wilson as homonym of the Uncle Sam.

After the Statue of Liberty, the Uncle Sam is probably the most famous symbol of The United States.

In 1971 the Congress recognized Uncle Sam the kinship of the symbol of the United States.

The first use of Uncle Sam occured in 1816 in a book :"The adventures of Uncle Sam in search After His Lost Honor" by Frederick Augustus Fidfaddy.

It is not clear whether this reference to Uncle Sam is a metaphor or a real personn named Sam.

Uncle Sam appeared in many songs from the United States more especially in military songs/ones.

Uncle Sam is an old white man, with white hair and bearing a small goatee. He wears a hat, a high hat bearing the colours of the United States and a swallowtail.

And he says : "We want you for the U.S army"

The more/most famous picture about him is a painting by James Montgomery Flagg performed during the first Worldwar.

There are many cartoons in which Oncle Sam appears:

-There is a cartoon in the 1980s called:" The adventures of Uncle Sam"

-Uncle Sam appears in the series "The Simpsons" in the Fourteenth episod of the twelveth season where he incits the young people to enlist through subliminal messages.

-In the series Batman, the Uncle Sam is an hero, leader of the fighters of the freedom.

So, the Uncle Sam is for me a symbol of freeedom.
