IDEA OF PROGRESS:

I’m going to talk about the idea of progress.

First of all, I would like to give a definition of this notion: The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change -a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place.

To illustrates this, I will focus on the case of India to try to explain why is India said to be a country of contradictions.

First, we’ll see India contracts, then we’ll see that India is a country on the way to progress and we’ll finish with India inequalities.

  1. India history

India has long been dominated by the British empire during the 19 centuries.

The British government stripped the economy of India and transformed it into an economy that benefited them.

Through political, material, and financial means the British government was able to establish complete control.

However, India is now the world’s largest democracy and is one of the most populous countries in the world with 1.3 billion inhabitants after China.

But India is also known over the world as a country of contradictions and to support this vision I have chosen a photography that illustrates it.

The contrast is striking but representative of the huge gap that has grown between rich and poor in an Indian economy that has grown phenomenally over the past two decades.

In the foreground, we can see Indian families on the beach wearing saris while in the background we have a high-tech city with buildings and skyscrapers. This document illustrates a dual vision of India. It depicts India as a country of contracts where traditions persist despite India development.

  1. A country on the march

India is a fast-growing country. “A country on the march” illustrates it. Effectively India is constantly growing and its population is estimated to reach 1,7 billion inhabitants in 2050. Also, the bar chart of the graph shows us that the service sector has increased dramatically from 1990 to 2009 while the agriculture and the industry sector has decreased. This sector which has undergone a great expansion has enriched a handful of businessmen: India then counts 55billionaires. In just a few years, India has become an essential country for all high-tech players, including computer services. India is now a country on the march with the development of technology sector. India, which is the seventh largest country in the world, is now more than ever a rich country but with an enormous number of poor people.

  1. India inequalities

India’s economy may be booming but it is one of the most unequal countries in the world and is also overwhelmed by poverty. The lack of investment in public areas leads only 17% of Indian people to think that India is thriving. 60% of people are living under 80rupi a day in 1981.

This poverty is explained by an unequal distribution of land and water. Non-agricultural activities, as important as they are, do not change these inequalities.

To conclude we’ll say that India is a country of contradictions because of her two faces. On one hand we have a thriving country with a sector service in development and a high technology at the point. While in the orther hand we have a country with people left in abject poverty.
