I will introduce you to the notion of the idea of progress.

To begin, I am going to define the notion of progress.

Progress can be understood as an advance which contributes to enhance our lives. It is a

term that covers a multitude of issues whether they be social or technological,

artistic, or domestic. Nevertheless, the interpretation that may preoccupies us the most is the progress in technology which has revolutionised our current lives. That is why I have chosen to talk about artificial intelligence to illustrate this notion. Artificial intelligence is a broad area of computer science that makes machines seem like they have human intelligence. In other words, these machines have the faculty to use trial and error in order to develop formal reasoning. Artificial intelligence, therefore, poses a major problem: will robots one day become more intelligent than us to the point of being a danger to humanity? We will try to provide an answer. In my expose I will first talk about the threats of AI by speaking about a book of Isaac Asimov “The fun they had” and exposing different point of view of several scientists such as Elon Musk or even Stephen Hawking. Then I will explain how AI could help us and improve our lives.

First, we should talk about the short story “The Fun they had” written by Isaac Asimov in 1954. This book deals with children from 2157 find an old school book. They don't really know what this object is for, because their education is done at home, by computer. Back home, Margie imagines the school of yesteryear, with a human teacher, necessarily more pleasant and flexible than a machine, and children free to read, discuss, play; she then concludes nostalgically, "The fun they had !». This document shows us that technology does not only have boons it has also banes. For instance, in the future imagined by Asimov it is more complicated to develop a friendship and there is probably a real lack of social interaction. In addition knowledge is limited and so are exchanges.

Other personalities such as Elon musk go even further by showing the dangers of robots and especially artificial intelligence. Elon Musk the Tesla CEO believes that one day robots would surpass us and make us obsolete and irrelevant. He goes even further by saying that by creating and improving artificial intelligence we are summoning with demon. He also suggested that fiction could become reality and therefore that one day machines will seek revenge on humanity. To sum up Elon Musk is afraid of the day AI gets smarter than us and we can’t turn it off. To prevent the realization of this nightmare, Elon Musk donated more than $10 million to research on how to keep artificial intelligence positive and founded Open-air, a project aiming to share A.I advantages. Musk hopes a neural lace will be developed connecting our brains to the AI.

The idea that artificial intelligence could potentially be dangerous is echoed by others like Bill Gates and Stephen Hawking.

Indeed like Musk, Hawking believed that the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race. In his opinion, one day humans couldn’t compete against machines and would be superseded. Indeed robots would take off on their own and re-design
