Spaces and exchanges

I'm going to talk about the notion of Spaces and Exchanges. To begin with, I'd like to give a definition of exchange. The different spaces of the world are nowadays more and more connected to each other. The exchanges can appear on many forms: people, trade, information . The immigration is linked to this notion as it implies the motion of legal and illegal people to other countries.  So, is America still a destination for immigrants ? In the first place, I'm going to talk about the past immigration. In a second part we will talk about the motivations of people to immigrate to the USA and the dangers of the trip, and finally we’ll see that the American Dream is still an enduring dream.

First of all, there have been a lot of waves of immigration in America since 1800. Indeed a long line of men and women persecuted for their religious beliefs, have taken refuge in America. Dissidents have come to America, because they were barred from their homelands as enemies of the state. Most immigrants have seen America as a promised land, and were just looking for a better life for themselves and their families. Four million refugees of from different nationalities, searching for safety, have come to America since World War. Which make America a multiethnic, and a multicultural country.

People immigrated to the USA because they were looking for freedom, religious toleration, a better life and because they were escaping from poverty, political oppression, religious persecution and economic hardship in their own countries. The immigrants had to face a lot of dangers and difficulties on their way to America. They had to save up money for the trip. They had to leave their home country and their families. The trip was very long, hard and dangerous.

Life was better for immigrants in the USA than in their country of origin because in the USA everything was new. In the USA, if they worked hard, they could make money, there was no political oppression or religious persecution as in their country of origin. Indeed the constitution set inalienable rights that let them be free.

Finally, the American dream is the notion that the American social, economic, and political system makes success possible for every individual. Many people criticize the idea of the American dream because they say that it is impossible for everyone to be able to fulfill their dreams – there are still inequalities in class, race, religion and ethnicity preventing people from “living the dream”.

conclusion To sum up I would say that even if the American economy is not thriving, booming, prosperous, the US still gives immigrants the opportunity to improve their lives, to remain hopeful for the future, to live in a democracy, to have a shot at the American Dream. So, America is still a destination for immigrants but for how long ?
