Geographical features of Scotland:

Scotland was a small country consisting of lowland and highland. Scotland is part of the United Kingdom. Scotland shares a single land border with England. The island of Ireland is about 30 km from the southwestern tip of Scotland, and Norway is about 400 km to the northeast. Scotland is bordered by the North Sea. The landscape of Scotland is punctuated by lochs, moors and fjords eve-rywhere. Loch Lomond is the largest freshwater lake in the UK.

Lowland is a region who refers to those parts of Scotland that do not belong to the Highlands. The Lowlands are home to 80% of Scotland's population, and the four main cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee are located there.

Highland is a mountainous region to the north and west. It is a geographically and historically isolat-ed region of Scotland. The classic Highland landscape is heather and fern-covered moorland dotted with huge rocks and crystal-clear lakes. The deep valleys have been shaped by glaciers that have also carved the west coast into fjords like those in Norway. In places the impermeable soil is marshy and covered with peat bogs. A special flora and fauna have developed in this very wet and cold wind-swept environment. The steep cliffs in places are home to all kinds of sea birds. Inland, there is a large population of deer.

In popular culture, the Hogwarts school in Harry Potter is in this region. The novel that gave rise to the Outlander series is set in this part of the country. The heritage is also present with the castle of Sinclair
